An iconic Scottish species
Red squirrels are one of Scotland’s most loved animals. For many people, an encounter with a red squirrel is a joyful, yet increasingly rare experience. While most of the UK’s red squirrels are found in Scotland, their populations are under threat.
This is largely due to the spread of the non-native grey squirrel, a North American species first introduced by the Victorians. Grey squirrels out-compete red squirrels for food and living space. They also carry squirrelpox, a disease that doesn’t harm greys but is deadly to reds.
Without direction action to control grey squirrel numbers, red squirrels could face extinction in Scotland. This would be a great loss for our natural heritage and would deny future generations the chance to enjoy them.

How you can help
With your help, we can continue to protect areas where red squirrels most need our support. Our network needs volunteers to get actively involved in red squirrel conservation. There are lots of ways you can help, and full training is provided:
Squirrel watch!
Surveying and monitoring local woods, and reporting squirrel sightings to jo.findlay1@hotmail.com is important so we know where red squirrels most need our support.
Become a volunteer
By volunteering, you’ll be joining a group of change-makers. Important volunteering roles include running events and social media, fundraising, raising public awareness, data management, IT, or grey squirrel control.
Donate
Get in touch with our group via the contact form to find out how to donate, and ways your support can make a difference.
